How big is the UK consultancy market?
The UK consultancy market is estimated to be worth £6.02 bn in 2014, second only in size to the US. The global market is estimated to be $344 bn, and the European market is estimated to be $82.1 bn, all figures depend upon the definition of consulting market adopted.

What is a business or management consultant?
A consultant is an expert or professional in a specific field, with a wide knowledge of that field, who provides advice in a specific area. A business or management consultant, specialises in advice relating to general business/management/leadership activities.
What is the difference between a business consultant and a management consultant?
In practice, there is no difference and the terms are interchangeable. It could be suggested that the term ‘Management Consultant’ confers a degree of superiority over ‘Business Consultant’, but we believe this not to be the case.

Interestingly, business schools generally call themselves ‘Business School’ (think London Business School, Harvard Business School) as opposed to ‘School of Management’ (Cranfield).
What is the difference between a business consultant, a business coach and a mentor?
A business consultant tends to work with the business to resolve, or improve specific business matters. A business coach supports a learner in achieving a specific personal or professional goal through advice and guidance. A mentor is similar to a coach, but tends to focus on general goals or overall development.
What ‘areas’ are typically covered by business consultants?
Key service areas in business consulting tend to fall into five principal areas: strategy; operations; financial advisory, human resources; and IT.

Where do consultants work?
Consultants tend to work in one of the following organisations: at a consulting firm; operate self-employed and work as a freelancer or work as a consultant outside the consulting industry (‘internal consultant’). It is estimated that there are tens of thousands of firms and hundreds of thousands of consultants. Approximately 93% of consultants are self employed or work in small firms.

Why does a consultant offer good value for money?
Using a business consultant is good value for money for the following reasons:
  • Consultants offer expertise and skills which can be expensive to hire;
  • Consultants offer flexibility. You only ‘hire’ for what is needed;
  • Utilising consultants offers you the ability to use your staff on your core business - work in which they excel;
  • Staff costs are more than the headline salary paid. Other costs and overheads include: employers national insurance; pension contributions; employee benefits; holiday pay; sickness pay; bonuses; heat and power; rent; training; etc.

Independent research carried out for the MCA has shown that consulting projects, on average, generate benefits for clients worth £6 for every £1 spent on fees.
